Four Immeasurables Retreat with John Bruna

April 11-14, 2024

“As human beings we all want to be happy and free from misery… we have learned that the key to happiness is inner peace. The greatest obstacles to inner peace are disturbing emotions such as anger, attachment, fear and suspicion, while love and compassion and a sense of universal responsibility are the sources of peace and happiness.”  –His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

As many of you know, we have had the great fortune for many years to host our retreats at Waunita Hot Springs Ranch. However, after running the ranch for over 60 years, the Pringles have decided to sell the ranch. We are deeply grateful for all they have done for so many over the years and for their care in hosting us.

In our quest to find a new retreat center, we were delighted to find the beautiful Blazing Mountain Retreat Center in Crestone, Colorado. Nestled in the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains of southern Colorado, the retreat center provides a contemplative and quiet space for undisturbed and undistracted spiritual exploration and we believe it is an ideal location for us to host our retreats beginning with our spring retreat in April.

The focus of the retreat will be the Four Immeasurable Attitudes – equanimity, loving-kindness, compassion, and empathetic joy. Teachings on each of these beneficial attitudes can be found in many spiritual traditions and cultures. However, they are taught as a cohesive unit within the Buddhist teachings known as the brahmavihāras, usually translated as “the four immeasurables.” While they have origins in Buddhist philosophy, the benefits of cultivating the four immeasurable attitudes are universal, not bound by any particular spiritual or religious belief. In our current times, we believe the world needs us to cultivate these qualities more than ever.

In addition to helping us cultivate a healthy and open heart, which nourishes our relationship with ourselves and others, they are also the antidotes to unhealthy attachments and aversions, hatred, ill will, jealousy, and envy—just as turning on a light dispels the darkness, these immeasurable attitudes dissipate destructive emotions and attitudes. Needless to say, one does not need to be a Buddhist to benefit from these precious teachings, they are universal to people of all faiths, traditions, and cultures. The four immeasurables, combined with meditation and mindfulness, help us all live with more resiliency, develop our inner resources, and have more peace and joy in our lives.

The retreat will be facilitated by our spiritual director,  John Bruna. John has a particular gift for making these valuable teachings accessible and practical for our modern lifestyles. All of his teachings focus on preparing students to properly engage in authentic practice in ways that are effective and meaningful to them. He is known for his warmth and humor, as well as practicality.

The retreat format will include teachings, meditation, discussion, and personal time. The first half of the day will be dedicated to meditation practice. There will be silence until lunch and multiple meditation sessions of 24 minutes with breaks. The afternoons and evenings will include discussions, question-and-answer periods, and time to connect with others.
