Venerable Gyalten Samten

Venerable Gyalten Samten is a nun in the Tibetan Buddhist order. Her first encounter with a Buddhist monastery was at the age of ten at Rumtek, Sikkim. The pristine beauty of the monastery combined with a playful interaction with young monks gave rise to a spontaneous wish to live there. However, her pleas were labeled ‘whimsical’ and duly dismissed. In the spring of 2001, Barkha met His Holiness, the Dalai Lama at Dharamshala. Deeply influenced by the compassionate actions of His Holiness and the Buddhist philosophy – particularly the concept of Bodhicitta – she enrolled in a Buddhist philosophy course.

Prior to ordination, Venerable Samten (previously Barkha Madan) was a well-known model and Bollywood actress, producer, and director. In 2012 embracing her inner calling she decided to give up her film career. Following the advice of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, she took ordination by the great Tibetan master His Eminence, Venerable Choden Rinpoche at Sera Jey Monastery, Karnataka, India. Since that time she has spent a great deal of time engaged in meditation retreats, study, center management, and as a meditation facilitator at various Dharma Centres in India and the USA.

The Way of Compassion Dharma Center has had the great fortune to host Venerable Samten for various practices, teachings, and retreats. Venerable is known for her clear teachings that touch the heart and mind, inspiring practitioners on the path. We encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about the powerful practice of Green Tara.

Green Tara represents the wisdom and compassion of all the enlightened beings in a female form. Meditating on Tara is a very powerful way to identify and connect with our own inner potential for wisdom and compassion, cultivate merit, and purify negativities. The practice also helps to eliminate many obstacles that interfere with our ability to cultivate our spiritual path and help others. The practices include meditation, prayers, and mantra recitation.
