This Sunday – Online and In-Person
Join us as we return to our monthly gatherings. After a long hiatus, we are grateful to once again offer both in-person and online retreats. We will begin with a half-day retreat lead by our spiritual director, John Bruna, focusing on the methods of “extracting the essence of this life” – cultivating merit and wisdom (the 2 accumulations).
Whether or not we consider ourselves Buddhist, the methods of extracting the essence of this life offer us the opportunity to live a more meaningful life and develop the wisdom to eliminate unnecessary mental and emotional suffering. Essentially, they are skills to understand the value of your life, remember each day is a precious opportunity to live it fully in ways that are meaningful, and greater insight into habits that either support or undermine one’s mental and emotional well-being. Ultimately, the teachings of the Buddha are about freedom from suffering and can be applied on multiple levels.
Advice from Lama Tsongkhapa
Lama Tsongkhapa, Dharma King of the three realms, has said:
This opportune physical form
Is worth more than a wish-granting gem.
You only gain it’s like the once.
So hard to get, so easily destroyed,
It’s like a lightning bolt in the sky.
Contemplate this and you will realize
All worldly actions are but winnowed chaff.
And night and day you must
Extract some essence of this life.
I, a yogi, practiced in this way.
You, wanting liberation, should do the same!
